Frequently Asked Questions

Below you will find answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you have any questions which cannot be found on this list, please email us.

1. The Caravan and Pilatus have only one engine?

Yes. Today's modern turboprop engines, like the one fitted on the Caravan and PC-12 are the most reliable in existence. Because of this demonstrated reliability, and additional maintenance procedures, the FAA has authorized single-engine IFR charter since 1998. The engines are monitored by a specially designed computer program that tracks even the minutest trends, giving plenty of advance warning of any reliability issues.
Piston engine aircraft (unlike the turbine engines on all of our aircraft) have very poor reliability when it comes to engine failure.

2. Can I bring my pet?

Well-behaved pets are welcome on our aircraft. We recommend that smaller animals travel in a carrier as it is usually more comfortable for all involved. Larger animals must be leashed and the Captain reserves the right to refuse access to certain animals if he or she feels that the animal might compromise safety.

3. May I eat on Board?

Of course. All our flights carry light snacks appropriate to the time of day. Should you desire something more, please let us know and we will make arrangements for you.

4. May I drink on board?

Of course. Upon your request, beer, wine and other drinks may be served. Everything in moderation, however. According to federal regulations, only the crew of the aircraft may serve you alcoholic beverages.

5. What type of baggage can I bring?

We can carry most baggage that can be accommodated by the airlines. The Caravan has a spacious cargo pod that can easily hold full sets of golf clubs and overnight bags for eight. In addition, the Caravan and PC-12 have a wide cargo door for larger items. We can even remove seats from the cabin for your larger items (we carried a full-dress Harley once). The King Air has more limited baggage space. We recommend that you pack soft-sided luggage for this aircraft. If you have any doubts that something will fit, please don't hesitate to call.

6. What about weather?

Tradewind Aviation's aircraft can fly in largely the same weather as the airlines. However, safety is our first priority. Some smaller airports do not have the aids to navigation required for poor weather and we will discuss this with you before your trip. Please also note that the Weather Channel sells advertising by hyping the weather. If you have concerns, please speak with us so that we can discuss the aviation weather with you.

7. Where can I fly?

Almost anywhere. With executive aircraft, almost any airport is accessible. Even places that are not airports can be served with helicopters or seaplanes. The Caravan and Pilatus, with their superior short field capability, can serve some of the smallest fields, including some private strips.

8. Security?

Executive charter has the best security possible: you personally know everyone on the aircraft. Because of this fact, the onerous security procedures of the airline terminals are not necessary and you can immediately board your aircraft. In the post 9/11 environment, some executive terminals at the busiest airports now insist on some cursory security screening. You will be advised of this prior to your flight. Personal security procedures for high profile / high risk individuals can also be arranged.

9. When can I fly?

Whenever you would like. We ask that you give us as much advance notice as possible, however, we can be ready for departure in as little as an hour.

10. What if I want something more?

The aircraft that we operate are not right for every trip. If this is the case, we will let you know. We can arrange larger aircraft through our network of trusted affiliates.

11. May I drive up to the aircraft?

You can usually drive right up to the aircraft to unload your baggage and travel companions. Some airports have begun to curtail this privilege in the post-9/11 environment. Your crew will advise you as to the particular procedures of your departure airport.
